MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT

Due to the strain of deployments upon the Family, Marriage Enrichment weekends are funded and supported by the command of the Montana National Guard.  These weekends are solely for married couples at various locations around the state.  The weekends are designed to make "good marriages" better!

This new fiscal year (2010), the weekend begins Friday evening at 1900 and ends Sunday morning after lunch.  The National Guard pays for TWO nights of lodging!  Mileage is paid for couples (traveling over 50 miles) and five meals! Now, there is some financial help for those paying for child care cost!

The weekend is designed to be a "win-win" experience as soldiers are allowed to attend in lieu of a drill. If the soldier wants to use the weekend as a SUTA, the soldier's commander needs to give his/her permission before the Marriage Enrichment weekend is attended.  Because resort areas are now being used, only 30 couples are cheduled for each Marriage Enrichment weekend.

These funded weekends indicate that the Family unit is primary in the eyes of the National Guard.
This WIN-WIN weekend has gotten BETTER since 2008 . . . why wait any longer,

How's Your Marriage? Quiz for Couples (Seven Item Version)
The following quiz has been formulated by the creators of the P.R.E.P. (Marriage Enrichment) material that is utilized for our National Guard weekends.  Have your spouse take this quiz with you and see how you fair as a couple.  This quiz is based on an understanding of many key studies in the field. Following the Quiz you can add up your points and use the scale to see how you are doing.

You should take the scores seriously, but realize that there is a lot that the quiz doesn't take into account about your relationship, such as about commitment, trust, friendship, and so forth. While these questions are based on studies that assess such things as the likelihood of a marriage working out, we would hate for any one person to take this and assume the worst about their future. Rather, we believe that the quiz can motivate high and medium- high scoring couples to take a serious look at where their marriage is heading--and take steps to turn negative patterns around for the better.

Please answer each of the following questions to see how you are doing. We recommend that you answer these questions by yourself and not share scores with your partner.

Use the following 3 point scale to rate how often you and your mate or partner experience the following:

1 = Never or almost never

2 = Once in awhile

3 = Frequently

1 2 3    Little arguments escalate into ugly fights with accusations, criticisms, name calling, or bringing up past hurts.
1 2 3    My partner criticizes or belittles my opinions, feelings, or desires.
1 2 3    My partner seems to view my words or actions more negatively than I mean them to be.
1 2 3    When we have a problem to solve, it is like we are on opposite teams
1 2 3    I hold back from telling my partner what I really think and feel.
1 2 3    I feel lonely in this relationship.
1 2 3    When we argue, one of us withdraws, that is, doesn't want to talk about it anymore; or leaves the scene.

Determining Your Score: (Seven Item Version)
Add up your points to determine your score. (Include only your scores, do not add to your partner's!) The ranges we suggest for the quiz are based on results from a nationwide, random phone survey of 947 people (85% married) in January 1996.

7 to 11 "Green Light"
If your total points is in the 7 - 11 range, your relationship is probably in good or even great shape AT THIS TIME, but we emphasize "AT THIS TIME" because relationships don't stand still. In the next 12 months you'll either have a stronger, happier relationship, or you could head in the other direction.
To think about it another way, it's like you are traveling along and have come to a green light. There is no need to stop, but it is probably a great time to work on making your relationship all it can be.

12 to 16 "Yellow Light"
If you scored in the 12-16 range, it's like you are coming to a "yellow light." You need to be cautious. While you may be happy now in your relationship, your score reveals warning signs of patterns you don't want to let get worse. You'll want to be taking action to protect and improve what you have. Spending time to strengthen your relationship now could be the best thing you could do for your future together.

17 to 21 "Red Light"
Finally, if you scored in the 17-21 range, it's like approaching a “red light.” Stop, and think about where the two of you are headed. Your score indicates the presence of patterns that could put your relationship at significant risk. You may be heading for trouble--or already may be there. But there is GOOD NEWS. You can stop and learn ways to improve your relationship now!

While passion can last a lifetime, at some point, love usually faces a “reality check.” If you haven’t already, you and your partner will likely each move from vaguely seeing, but not caring much about your partner’s flaws, to seeing clearly and caring very much.

Some marital experts suggest that couples need to understand that once the euphoric state is over, it’s over. The deep passion-the burning flame-has gone out, so get over it and learn to live without those feelings, or go find a new partner and start all over again. We don’t think that’s the truth of love at all. We’d agree more with Henry David Thoreau when he said, "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."

We believe that passion and deep love can last for a lifetime. It doesn’t always. In fact, it doesn’t often. Deep, lasting love is not common, but it is a treasure worth pursuing, protecting, even fighting for. Thirty years of research have shown that having a great marriage is not just a matter of luck nor is an unhappy marriage a matter of mystery. Couples can learn the skills and principles of successful relationships. The PREP Approach (that is utilized for our Marriage Enrichment Weekends) is designed to teach you how to keep your Love-Castle in the air where it should, and can, be.

MARITAL COUNSELING upon request

BAPTISMS may be arranged for individuals in the chapel.  A meeting with the chaplain precedes a scheduled baptism.

FUNERALS, GRAVESIDE SERVICES, OR COMMITALS may be arranged upon request with a telephone call to the chaplain or his assistant.

CHAPLAINS, CHAPLAINS, CHAPLAINS are currently needed by the Montana National Guard.  There are three vacancies with the Army and one with the Air National Guard.  If you would like to serve your country as a chaplain ministering to the spiritual needs of soldiers, contact Chaplain DuVall.  Among the many requirements are: an undergraduate college degree is required consisting of 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours, graduate studies consisting of at least 72 hours of theological studies, and there a maximum age of entry (prior service experience is not required).  Recently, the government is now allowing “older” pastors to become initial chaplains.  Talk to Chaplain DuVall about the financial benefits in addition to serving your country and ministering to the needs of soldiers.

A CHAPLAIN CANDIDATE program is now available for college graduates enrolling in one of the recognized seminaries.  Montana now has three chaplain candidates attending one seminary in Georgia and the other seminarians attending separate seminaries in Oregon!

There is always a need for CHAPLAIN ASSISTANTS.  Contact MSG Lassila concerning chaplain assistant positions.
CHAPLAIN SUPPORT available upon request to battalion, company, etc.
Contact Chaplain DuVall or MSG Lassila.

The following schedule was put together by Michael Coley.  I would suggest using a Bible that is comfortable reading for you.  There are many different translations, but I would use one that is easy to understand.

FOR SINGLE SOLDIERS
Chaplain DuVall attended a workshop by John Van Epp, Ph.D. that was designed for single soldiers!  This class is designed to help singles gain guidance on the slippery slopes of premarital relationships.  Accelerated attachments and a lack of clear understanding of what to look for in a prospective partner, mixed with the isolation of most singles in this process have resulted in too many relationship casualties.  This course is to help singles learn how to maneuver through the course of their premarital relationships while lessening the risks of injury.  No one ever plans to get divorced when marrying, but today’s ratios are only a 50% success rate.  This course has been adequately subtitled: “How to Avoid Marrying a JERK or JERKETTE”.

CHAPLAIN ACTIVITIES
Chaplain DuVall is always looking for possible pastors/priests to recruit or possible chaplain candidates to recruit for Montana’s Chaplain Corps.  If you are interested, call CH DuVall utilizing his office or cell phone.

Short-Term Solution-Focused Telephonic Consultation
Whether it's help with child care, money matters, emotional support during deployments, relocation information, or referrals to helpful resources both on and off an installation, Military OneSource is there for military personnel and their families 24/7. In an effort to further increase access to support, Military OneSource now offers Short-term Solution-Focused Telephonic (STSF-T) Consultation. While referrals to non-medical face-to-face counseling sessions continue for those stationed in United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the new expanded service provides a telephonic consultation option for those who are unable to attend face-to-face counseling sessions due to their overseas location or other circumstances.

Both the STSF-T Consultation and the face-to-face counseling sessions may help individuals with many issues such as: adjustment to situational stressors, stress management, decision making, communication, grief and loss, blended family issues, and parenting skills. As with face-to-face counseling, STSF-T provides up to six sessions of consultation per person, per issue.

There are some differences between face-to-face counseling and STSF-T Consultation. Because STSF-T Consultation is provided over the phone, it is not appropriate for children under the age of 18, complex issues, and situations that require a group setting (couples and family counseling). Other issues that exceed the scope of STSF-T include drug, alcohol and other addictions; mental health conditions that require medical treatment (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.); and other conditions related to trauma. The STSF-T Consultation is not appropriate as part of a patient's Medical Treatment Facility discharge plan.

Military OneSource is available anytime worldwide to all active duty, Reserve, National Guard members, their families, as well as deployed civilians and their families.

To find out more, call Military OneSource at 1-800-342-9647 (CONUS), or 800-3429-6477 or 484-530-5908 (OCONUS). For more information on calling Military OneSource from overseas visit www.militaryonesource.com <https://swd1.ceridian.com/swm/www.militaryonesource.com> and click the "Contact Us" link at the upper right of the page. A consultant can provide more details on STSF-T and discuss your options with you.
